Can I Have A Driveway Installed In Autumn?

Block Paving Driveways Telford - Front view of modern residential home

The end of meteorological summer might leave some householders wondering if they missed the boat by not getting a new driveway laid while the days were hot and dry. However, autumn is actually one of the very best times to lay a driveway.

Whether it is block paving, asphalt or any other material, autumn works very well for several reasons:

  • Installers are less busy and more freely available
  • The soil tends to be dry but not hard, so block paving or other materials can settle in nicely.
  • It should be firmly established before winter
  • The temperatures will be right for applying sealant and resin
  • You don’t have to contend with frost or frozen ground
  • When laying asphalt, it doesn’t melt in the heat as it would have done during one of the summer heatwaves.

This may come as a great relief if you had been thinking of getting a new driveway laid down during the summer but had not got round to it. You won’t have to wait until the middle of next year to get it done.

What Weather Conditions Do You Need To Lay A Driveway In Autumn?

Of course, you still need the right conditions, such as dry weather, with some meteorologists suggesting that the El Niño conditions that have contributed to the summer heat may prompt a busy storm season. (The Met Office has just published its storm names for 2026-27.)

However, even if Britain finds itself working a long way down the alphabet towards the likes of Olaf (presumably a snowy storm) or Shaun (when sheep will get blown over), there will still be plenty of days with optimal weather conditions, being dry and a reasonable temperature.

So, as the kids go back to school and the nights draw in, you can be assured that now is a great time to contact us and book the driveway work that you didn’t get around to having done during the summer.
