How does it work?
Gravel Driveway Groundworks Preparation

A gravel drive must also be prepared in the right way to ensure the base is adequate to take the weight of the type of vehicular traffic it is made for.
Some soil types will require different methods of preparation, and sometimes a stabilising or anti-weed membrane may be required, but we can talk clients through these options on a free site visit.

Diging out.

The first step is to dig out the driveway area. This will include removing turf, soil, tarmac or concrete and any existing surface you have. The  ground will need to be dug down to a sufficient depth of at least a minimum of 8 inches. This will depend on what type of vehicles you will have using your drive.

MOT

The area will now be infilled with MOT  (hard base stone). This will form a compact hard base. this is then wackered several times until a solid base is formed.

Edges will be concreted in around the area. There are a variety of options for edges that can be chosen by the customer. They could be block paviours, abbey sets, wood or rope top. See below for more information on the different types of options.
The edging is concreted in and haunched to allow for no movement.  This also helps to retain the gravel in place on the chosen decorative edge.

Membrane and gravel the driveway

A quality weed proof ground stabilising membrane will be used to fully cover the area. gravel or chipping will then be spread on top of the membrane. the gravel will be raked down to a suitable and flat level. Care is taken not to have too thick a layer of gravel as we do not wish to have any sinking. it should be no more than 2cm thick.

The Finished gravel Driveway

Why chose gravel??? Gravel driveways are a cost effective way to enhance a large space rather using block paving. Gravel driveways are becoming a very popular option for low maintenance driveways. Its a great cost effective surface for any driveway, with many lovely decorative colours and choices available.

Gravel and edging options

There are many different edging types to choose from, including block paviours of all shapes and colours, pre-formed concrete edgings such as the rope top style, kerb edgings etc. The key is to choose an edging to compliment the gravel or chippings being used, and again the gravels come in many colours and sizes too. We can help you to find the right combination for your property.
