Driveway Maintenance Tips For Winter
To help prolong the lifespan of your driveway, it is important to keep it clear and well-maintained through the coldest season of the year. It will not only improve its durability but ensure your driveway looks great all year round, regardless of the weather. We have some tips to get you started!
Clear snow and ice as it arrives
The Met Office has issued warnings of further snow and ice this winter, blowing in on the tail of Storm Arwen. While most parts of the UK do not get serious snowfall, whether you get a light sprinkling or a heavy fall, remove the snow from your driveway as soon as possible to prevent it from building up and causing more problems down the line.
Ensure your driveway is sealed
Sealing your driveway can protect it from both snow and ice, as neither will be allowed to settle and then melt or refreeze in small cracks or holes that may be present in your driveway. When snow or ice melts and then refreezes, it expands – something which could make a crack worse if snow or ice were to melt and then refreeze inside one.
Avoid using salt or chemicals to remove ice patches
It may be tempting to scatter rock salt onto your driveway, but this should be avoided. When salt melts the snow, it turns into a saltwater slushy, which then seeps into the cracks and gaps in your driveway, which as mentioned above will freeze and cause damage.
Use a garden broom to brush away light snowfall
Typical snowfall in the UK can amount to around one or two inches, which may need nothing more than a staff garden broom to sweep it away. This also mitigates the use of a shovel, if left to accumulate, which can potentially damage your driveway if the shovel is not in great condition.
