Graded Hoggin Surfaces.
Creating your perfect Hoggin surface.
Hoggin is the term given to a mixture of clays, sands and gravels to form a material that compacts well and provides a usable , stable surface at a low cost.
There can be variations in colour but it is predominately "buff" in colour, which is set off nicely with a charcoal block. Other edging options are available and we can you chosen the one that helps compliment your driveway the best.
This material is normally used in the south and east of England but if this is your preferred choice then we can locally source this lovely material for you.
Please see below to learn more about the process of creating a beautiful hoggin surface.

How does it work?
Preparation of Hoggin
The desired area will be dug out to a sufficient depth for sub base and top base (6mm dust hoggin). Around 50 mm for Hoggin and 120mm for MOT is the most suitable depth in preparation for hoggin.
The selected edging material (that has been chosen by the customer) will be laid around the perimeter of the area. If its 3x2 wood then these will be staked firmly in the ground so they will not move. If a block edge is chosen, then these will be laid on a full bed of a sand and gravel concrete mix and backed up with concrete so that they will never move. This will add a lovely decorative edge.
Creating the layers.
The area is In-filled with 80mm of MOT sub stone, which is whacked in layers Then a 20-40mm layer of MOT is applied on top and whacked in layers. This is whacked several times in order to form a solid base suitable for hoggin. A ground stabilising membrane will be laid over the top. This membrane underneath the hoggin prevents the hoggin mixing with the MOT and keeps them separate.

Application of the Hoggin
The 6mm dust hoggin product is then raked and spread (not up to full height) and whacked again in layers. The final 6mm dust hoggin is then raked loose and levelled. This is then damped with water as its being whacked which binds the hoggin together to form a solid driveable surface, which is suitable for vehicles and forms a driveway surface or pathway surface.
Hoggin is easy to maintain and keep it fresh looking by simply raking the top and re-whackering or adding a fresh layer of hoggin. Hoggin has a good life span if laid correctly.
