How Can You Prepare Your Driveway For Summer?
Summer is a surprisingly intense time for your driveway, as it is not only one of the best times to install new paving due to a lower chance of rain, but the combination of heat, journeys and ultraviolet exposure means that any weaknesses in the drive can be exposed.
The effects of
UV rays can cause damage and fading on a number of driveway surfaces, the heat can cause fatigue points to evolve into outright cracks and the pressure of a car driving on and off of it can exacerbate any existing problems.
Thankfully, it is not too difficult to take care of your driveway over the summer, and it can be easily integrated into other gardening and landscaping jobs around the house. It is also an ideal time to take stock and look into whether any professional repairs or upgrades are needed.
Check Your Drive
Before you start any maintenance, take a look up and down your drive and look for anywhere where the surface looks uneven, any cracks and any potholes, even if they are fairly small.
The temperature disparity between roasting summer days, cooler nights and sudden storms can lead to any existing cracks expanding.
Depending on your drive surfacing, this is a job you might be able to do yourself, or it could require expert assistance.
Clean The Surface
Dust, debris and stains can collect and become quite stubborn to remove if they are allowed to linger on the surface of your drive. Assuming there is no hosepipe ban, use a pressure washer or high-pressure hose to clean the surface.
Cooling the surface can be essential for maintaining your drive, so even if you cannot use a hose, try and pour the water you have been using for other purposes such as washing up onto the drive, as it will absorb at least some of the heat.
Seal Or Reseal Your Drive
Sealing your drive with a UV-resistant sealant suitable for the surface material is vital to maintain its longevity, as it will stop moisture or potential staining materials from ruining the finish of your paving.
You will typically need to reseal your drive every couple of years, so if it has been a while, consider resealing.
