Top Tips For Making Your Driveway Greener
In recent years, homeowners have been looking for ways to harmonise their gardens, driveways and paving with their gardens and natural surroundings, leading to a growing trend in wild driveways.
Part of this is a matter of practicality; with a greater focus on SuDS-compliant surfaces, greener driveways are far less prone to flooding than older, larger drives made from impermeable materials such as concrete.
There are a lot of ways to add greenery to your driveway, but here are some top tips.
Create Space For Plants
A great option for a greener drive is to have a strip of gravel or even grass in the middle that can allow plants to grow.
If you regularly commute or use a garage, this area will be uncovered for far more of the day than you might expect, and can be a perfect place to start growing wildflowers.
Alternatively, creating little strips of grassland can have a similar result if you want to keep your larger pavers. There are even lattice designs and many other creative options to have greenery and paving.
Let It Grow
The temptation for driveways and lawns is to make them as ordered, neat and short as possible, but this is unnecessary and often counterproductive.
Instead, let wild plants grow and see what results. Most wildflowers are not weeds and even the ones that are can be easily removed using a garden fork or boiling water. Both of these options are much better for the environment than the liberal use of pesticides and weedkillers.
Give it time as well; whilst it may not initially look that different, once the plants bloom into beautiful flora that attracts beautiful fauna, the process will be very much worth it.
Plant The Seeds
Either sow seeds or plant little sprouts into the gaps between your driveway pavers. This helps to establish your driveway as a place for plants to grow. Once you have some plants bedded and growing, it only gets easier to plant more.
